Trophy black bear taken at this Maine hunting lodge

Mt. Chase Lodge Features
Maine's finest Bear Hunting

The Patten area has long been noted for perhaps the most outstanding bear hunting opportunities of anywhere in the country. If properly prepared for, the bear hunt can be a very exciting and rewarding experience for the patient, persistent, hunter.

Maine has enjoyed a very substantial bear population over the last 10 to 20 years, making the opportunity to successfully hunt the bruin better than ever. We employ the method of still hunting over active baiting areas, which are set up and maintained well before the hunting season for bear begins. Each hunter is given an active bait area to hunt and is not restricted to any one spot. Bait sites are located a short distance from a serviceable logging road, and strenuous walking is not required.

We hunt over thousands of acres encompassing many townships. Our hunting sites are registered with the landowners, with whom we maintain contractual hunting agreements.

After a hearty noon time meal, the hunter is driven to his hunting site in the early afternoon and hunts until dark. Five to six hours on stand is the normal hunting duration. After the day's hunt is complete, the hunter is picked up and returns for an appetizing evening meal. Mornings are free to fish or just relax before the afternoon hunt.

Any rifle in the .30 caliber range is fine for bear hunting, with most shots within 50 yards. Bow hunters can expect shots within 20 yards.

The hunter should include in his gear a fine mesh head net for evening, warm trousers, rain gear and gloves, camouflaged hat and outer garments, and a small flashlight.

Over a 33 year span, our success rate on bagged bears has averaged 30 - 50%. Sightings are considerably higher. It is very possible to see multiple bears during the course of a week's hunt.
